Martha’s in the kitchen, cooking up a mighty storm, yea,
Jesus, even Jesus our Lord is coming over, for a little stay.
Cooking this, O my, and cooking that, laying the table out,
getting it done, getting it right, beyond a shadow of a doubt.
Knock, knock, knock, who’s at the door, even Jesus and the rest,
Mary, Mary, let them in, whilst I clean up this here hopeless mess.
My Lord! My Lord! Do come in, please, rest a bit, recline,
do rest a bit, been waiting all day, tell me about heaven fine.
Bang it goes, bang, bang, bang, mighty busy kitchen sounds,
dear Martha whirls, the corner turns, righteous indignation abounds.
Hands on hips, nary a hello, straightaway to Jesus she says,
I do all the work, all day long while, look, at your feet she lays.
Martha, Martha, you are mighty busy, about many, many things,
Mary has found, that precious Rest, indeed, that Salvation brings.
Luke 10:40-42, Matthew 11:28-30
And so it is when busyness, like idolatry looms, like idolatry looms,
put Jesus first, and rest friend rest, whilst Salvation blooms.
(How good is that win-win!)
